Conform!! Coooooonnnnfoormmmm!!!!!

Conformity. Going with the flow. Sitting back, agreeing with everybody else. Being cool. Not opinionated. Let others do the thinking. Brain-dead. Idiot.

OK, I kinda ran out of synonyms there so I switched to harsher ones. Sadly they ring true. I’m definitely talking about the negative side of it, as the positive side is rather, ummm, irrelevant to making my point.

If your still with me, let’s analyze this issue a little. The experience I’ve had with “conformists” is rather extensive. After all, living in a “christian” community can produce those kind of effects.

I’ll cite this example: I’m in class, some issue about whether Rock music is satanic or not and what does half the class do? They sit back and let one or two people do the debating. They don’t want to get mixed in because their views might get “confused”. So what’s gonna happen when they end up having to defend their opinion to someone with opposing ideas and views? Let’s just say the discussion will end rather quickly or be really one-sided.

Now I’m not arguing that it’s always wise to give your opinion, especially if it only serves to get the participants, including yourself, worked up without actually having agreed on anything.

It’s not just in discussions, also in lifestyle, habits, taking almost any literature for it’s word (that is, if it conforms to their views, whatever those might be, and condemning what doesn’t).

Anti-conformity is a way of life. Don’t be happy with what your teacher tells you, find out and argue that it lacks foundation if that’s how it is. Just because half you friends smoke pot, leave it be because your gonna regret it sooner or later. Just because your pastor gives an impressive sermon, don’t take him for his word, find out if it was actually true and not just a bunch of theological pholosiphy.

To not be a conformists is to use that round thing above your shoulders.
